Mogan on a sunny day

Our oldest daughter had the day of from school today. And as the weather was awesome I asked if she wanted to go birding with me and she answered promptly “yes”. So after leaving the youngest at the kindergarten we went to Mogan – one of the really few decent birding areas that can be reached on a “few hour” trip from Ankara.

The temperatures only reached 7 C in the shadow and some water holes were still frozen. But in the sun it actually got really warm today. And it’s not just the weather that has turned more “springish”. Migrants are turning up in good numbers now.

Today there were good numbers of White Wagtails, Green Sandpipers and Ruff. Furthermore my first Grey Wagtail of the year decided to walk just a few meters away from the car – to my daughters explicit joy.

After checking the wetlands south of Mogan we went to the lake itself. On the late I was quite surprised to find an early Garganey male. But when they can show up it Shetland in the middle of march I guess it’s not that weird.

Due to the awesome weather I used some time photographing Penduline Tits, Bearded Tits and I also tried to get some Cetti’s Warbler shots.

All in all a very good a pleasant trip, but I do look forward to be able to go a little further away soon.
